A small fire and anti-gay graffiti were found Saturday at a church belonging to the United Church of Christ, a denomination that endorsed same-sex marriage last week.
The exterior of St. John's Reformed United Church of Christ also included a message that United Church of Christ members were sinners.
A member of the congregation discovered the graffiti when he stopped by to mow the grass. He found a small fire within the sanctuary. The fire was put out in a few minutes, Lt. Tim McCray said.
A Virginia State Police fire investigator was on the scene Saturday afternoon, but declined to comment.
The fire came a day after two black churches were heavily damaged by seven arson fires in Sparta, Tenn. Authorities said there was no evidence that it was a hate crime, but they were not ruling anything out.
Someone also tried to set fire to a mosque early Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., and the FBI was investigating it as a hate crime.
The United Church of Christ's rule-making body endorsed a resolution July 4 endorsing same-sex marriage. UCC churches are autonomous, meaning the General Synod does not create policy for its more than 5,700 congregations.

I found it odd that we had to have a law barring same sex weddings. We could have sorted out the churches, and gays at the same lick. However ,if we looked upon as a disability and confined the males to an island and the females to another, 'bout one generation and a lot of this would "disappear". It is sad when someone goes into a church and write's anything on the walls or anywhere else. I don't care if it is a gay organization. I don't believe in homosexuality at all, it is a sin and God says it is a dangerous thing to fall into the hands of a angry and just God. He showed his anger when he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. So the ones who did this to a church are not winning the lost this way. They have only added fuel to a fire. People sin everyday and those who live by the word of God should not act like this IMO. They are not showing Christ in any way. People should quit playing God as a judge and worry about their own soul. Let God do his job and in time God reveals to us all our sin and it is up to us to repent and be saved or keep living in our sin. Now to the ones ordaining homosexuals they have committed an abomination and I would hate to be in their shoes on judgement day. Though I don't agree with their lifestyle I would not cast them away. I would welcome them in my home and treat them just like my guest and I would hope they would treat me the same.

you just summed up every thought i have ever had on here about anything spoken about the bible. There are so many things in the bible that people dont even know about. they say "oh, its in the bible" well, how many on here would sacrifice their first born son? how many would sell a daughter into slavery. some things in the bible just absolutely ARE not happening today. so please dont tell people all the time that they need to "go read their bible" many people interpret things differently. but yes, so much is well i hate to use this word "outdated" and people forget to mention those parts when they go read their bibles.
